Zelkova Bonsai / ‘Japanese Elm’ 28cm

This beautiful bonsai set up is perfect for a beginner looking to get their first bonsai or even the more experienced collectors. The Zelkova is deciduous, during it’s full bloom it has a full, stunning growth of dark green leaves. Native to North Japan, this plant is highly sought after due to the elegant feel it brings to any home.

*Pot size: 28cm. Non toxic to pets.*

Watering

You must be diligent in ensuring that the Zelkova does not dry out, but is also not overwatered. The soil should be damp, but not sopping wet, before watering. To water this plant, place the plant (along with the the ceramic pot) in to a bowl of water, allowing the water to bubble. When the bubbles stop rising, the plant has absorbed what it needs and can be removed from the water.

Lighting

Zelkova bonsai should be kept in full sun in the spring and autumn, with the exception of extreme spikes in temperature.

During the summer, or any unexpected high temperatures, Zelkova should be placed in semi-shade. Otherwise, the leaves will become dehydrated and burn, weakening the Zelkova.

Did you know?

Bonsais require defoliation. The technique of defoliation seeks to generate smaller leaves. If your Zelkova still has slightly large leaves, this technique can help you. Normally this technique is done after the ripening of the spring buds. That would be between May and September. The idea is to cut all the leaves, leaving only the petiole. That encourages a second spring in the tree, so more leaves and smaller than the previous ones will come out. This technique can only be applied to trees that are healthy.

Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves. Collections or ‘mixed’ listings for plants will be selected dependant on availability and carefully hand-picked to ensure their quality.
